Do we treat asthma optimally? (Why do asthmatics exacerbate)
Despite the increase of knowledge about asthma pathogenesis and actual treatment strategies, exacerbations remain redoubtable complication of asthma. This manuscript summarizes main causes of exacerbations: infection (viruses – above all rhinoviruses, bacteria – in particular atypical pathogens, moulds – especially Alternaria tenuis) and environmental factors. Definitive role of asthma control as crucial factor lowering risk of exacerbation is emphasized.
