Urological causes of nocturia/ diagnostics, treatment of nocturia
Nocturia is an independent entity and is a common problem of multifactorial origin, significantly reducing the quality of life, especially due to intermittent sleep. Nocturia occurs in both sexes, and as the population ages, so does its prevalence. Nocturia is not just a urological problem – in addition to urological diseases, it can also be a neurological, endocrinological, cardiological, gynecological, psychiatric disorders/diseases. The algorithm for diagnosing and treating nocturia depends on its etiology and in most cases requires a multidisciplinary approach. Common causes of nocturia are primary nocturnal polyuria with decreased antidiuretic hormone secretion (which is not thought of, although it is present in more than 60 % of patients with overactive bladder and benign prostatic hyperplasia) and lower urinary tract dysfunction. The treatment of nocturia should focus mainly on its root cause and should initially be conservative using interdisciplinary cooperation.
