Metabolic surgery in the treatment algorithm of obese type 2 diabetic patients

The largest global public health emergencies of today is growing pandemic of diabetes mellitus, respectively, combination of obesity with type 2 diabetes (diabesity). In the treatment of type 2 diabetes we used diet and lifestyle modification in combination with pharmacotherapy (oral antidiabetic agents, insulin). To the forefront worldwide gets bariatric/metabolic surgery. The term metabolic surgery means elective surgical treatment on the gastrointestinal tract, which leads to improvement, ideally to the disappearance of metabolic complications of obesity, primarily to improvement or to remission of type 2 DM. Despite of the increase in evidence for significant benefits of bariatric/metabolic surgery in type 2 diabetic patients, in the current Slovak existing algorithms for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, is metabolic surgery still missing. The global trend recognition and inclusion metabolic/bariatric surgery as a treatment option in obese type 2 diabetic patients is still a challenge for us.
