COXIBS IN RHEUMATOLOGY
Coxibs are specific inhibitors of cycloxygenase-2 with analgetic and antiphlogistic efficacy comparable to non-selective NSAIDs, but with significantly lower occurrence of adverse gastrointestinal effects. In rheumatology, they are indicated mostly for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis patients with the verified gastroduodenal ulcers in their last five year history or if they are currently treated with glucocorticoids or anticoagulant agents. Recently, the issue of their adverse cardiovascular effects is discussed and their benefit for patients as related to their cost efficiency ratio.
