Collaboration between neurosurgeon and interventional radiologist in the diagnosis and treatment of meningiomas

Meningiomas are relatively common intracranial pathologies that are histologically benign in the vast majority, but due to their expansive behaviour towards the brain tissue, they can lead to severe morbidity and mortality. Complex meningiomas often require multidisciplinary cooperation. This article, which is designed as a mini-review, describes the cooperation of neurosurgeon and interventional radiologist in the management of a patient with meningioma in a Slovak clinical environment. A more specific focus is mainly on the significance of cerebral angiography in diagnosis and endovascular embolization in the treatment of meningiomas. We present the necessary neuroanatomical and neurophysiological notes, summarize the benefits and risks of preoperative embolization, and describe our decisionmaking algorithm. The article also includes an illustrative case report of a patient with a large meningioma who underwent preoperative tumor embolization.
