Present status of carotid stenting in Slovakia

The aim of article is a brief overview of present status of carotid artery stenting with emboloprotection in Slovakia. Surgical carotid endarterectomy has been in past the gold standard in the treatment of carotid artery disease, but series of published data and our experience suggest that carotid artery stenting with embolic protection devices and especially in selected subgroup of patients is a very viable alternative. The key factor contributing on excelent results of CAS is first of all the site experience, with case dose over 200 pts/year. Very important part for patients distribution for each type of treatment is carefull and individual patients selection, to identify suitable candidates for each method of treatment. Because of lack of strong scientific evidence worldwide, not only in Slovakia, the treatment of carotid artery stenosis will continue to be among the most controversial topics in vascular disease management.
