Carotid endarterectomy versus carotid artery stenting

Surgical and endovascular therapy is more effective than medical management in prevention of stroke in patients with cerebrovascular insufficiency with asymptomatic and symptomatic atherosclerotic carotid artery stenosis. In being to abidance of the indications and contraindications in both therapeutic methods are therefore not significant differences in combined morbidity and mortality and in mid-term results. The carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting are considered to be equal therapeutic methods for patients with cerebrovascular insufficiency in vascular medicine. The carotid endarterectomy is referred as gold standard method in invasive therapy. The subgroup of patients with high surgical risk would benefit from carotid artery stenting.
