Iatrogenic injuries after arterial endovascular procedures and their management
Introduction: In the last years there has been an increase in mini -invasive endovascular techniques. With this increase the is also a higher rate of endovascular complications. Regardless of the access site, arterial perforation or thrombosis may occur, that may be limb threatening or fatal if not treated promptly. The early recognition of such complications and management result in lower morbidity and mortality. Materials and methods: Our statistical analysis results from a pool of patients that were treated at the University hospital in Martin between 2018 – 2022. In this article we analyze the types of complications, the method of surgical treatment and also the treatment of hemorrhagic states. Morbidity and mortality are also present. Patients whose complications were treated endovascularly were excluded. Results: Of 11053 endovascular arterial procedures, 71 complications were present that were treated by open surgery. Conclusion: Treatment of endovascular complications by means of open vascular surgery remains a standard method. The therapy however is complicated by severe comorbidities and the need of aggressive antiplatelet therapy with iatrogenic induced bleeding.
