The issue of sterile pyuria in urological practice
Pyuria (leukocyturia) is a typical sign of urinary tract infections and is usually accompanied by bacteriuria in the urine sediment. In sterile (abacterial) pyuria, there is no finding of bacteriuria in the urine sediment and the urine culture is negative. As a matter of fact, sterile pyuria is not rare and occurs in the population in 14 % of women and 3 % of men. The article deals with the most frequent causes of sterile pyuria and briefly presents the basic diagnostic options within the differential diagnosis.
