Soluble tumor markers in the detection of papillary
Research and new knowledge in the field of genetics and molecular biology extend the possibilities of diagnosis and choice of treatment modalities also in the diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Genetic changes in the DNA of PTC cells lead to the formation of products, which once released into the bloodstream theoretically should be identifiable in the blood of the invaded individual and might thus serve as new oncomarkers. This would prevent more invasive methods of diagnosis and even assist in deciding about the extent of the operation if a safe PTC oncomarker(s) were discovered. By 2014, we observed 3,55% of carcinomas in the group of our operated patients for thyroid diseases. In common groups of surgical clinic and clinic of head and neck surgery and ENT in ÚVN Ružomberok FN in the years 2015-2018, as many as 7.9% of PTC were represented in the operations of TG(thyroid gland). We explain this increase by significantly improved diagnostics of this disease as well as by centralization of oncological interventions on the TG in Ružomberok. In the group of patients of the Surgical Clinic ÚVN Ružomberok FN, we observed complications characteristic for thyroid surgery: lesion of the nervus laryngeus recurrens unilateral in 2.8%, and bilateral in 0,18%. Transitory postoperative hypoparathyroidism in our group was documented in 6,9% and permanent in 1,78%.
