Treatment options of stenosis ileo-pouch anal anastomosis
Proctocolectomy with ileal-pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA) is now considered the standard surgical treatment option for patients with ulcerative colitis. Despite the complexity of the operation is proctocolectomy with ileo-pouch anal anastomosis considered safe and includes acceptable risk of complications. Although most patients benefit from improvement of quality of life, with good functional results, this operation can be associated with a significant number of complications leading to pouch failure and pouch excision with permanent stoma. The most common complications leading to pouch failure are pouchitits and chronic pelvis sepsis: stenosis and fistulas. Our work gives an overview of possible solutions and our experience in the treatment of stenosis in the IPAA.
