Surgical repair of parastomal hernias
Parastomal hernia is considered to be one of major problems in intestinal surgery, while it still lacks a uniform definition. The condition develops as a late-onset complication following stoma surgery. It may occur in an acute or chronic form. Treatment of parastomal hernia is often complicated and in many cases requires an individual approach. Successful treatment is conditional on a thorough evaluation of symptoms, which may vary from cosmetic problems to life-threatening complications. Today, surgeons may choose from several procedures, each of which presents certain advantages and disadvantages. The use of prosthetic mesh, which is becoming more and more common, can be considered both in the prevention and treatment of parastomal hernia.
