Acute appendicitis after appendectomy

Appendicitis is a common surgical emergency which is treated by surgical intervention. Stump appendicitis is an inflammation that develops in the remaining part of the appendix following appendectomy, it’s one of the rare complications after appendicitis surgery, and occurs at a rate of 1/50.000 in cases after appendectomy. Although patients manifest the same findings as those with acute appendicitis on physical examination and laboratory tests, the history of previous appendectomy may cause delays in diagnosis. Complications such as perforation and peritonitis can develop if an early diagnosis cannot be made. High clinical suspicion and confirmatory radiological imaging are pivotal for preoperative diagnosis. Surgery is the definitive management for stump appendicitis.
