Optimising treatment in Alzheimer’s disease
The first step in Alzheimer’s disease treatment is an accurate diagnosis and recognition of all symptoms of the disorder. Management should start as soon as possible, optimally in the initial stage of the disease. The approach has to be complex, person-centred and conclude not only the patient but also his family/caregivers. Careful assessment for any comorbidities, their treatment and programming meaningful activities is necessary. Management of problem behaviors begins with a careful search for triggers and causative factors, where possible should be non-pharmacological. Cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine are recommended for Alzheimer’s disease treatment. In the terminal stage of dementia the palliative approach should be considered.
