Mitochondria dysfunction in Alzheimer‘s disease
A brief review deals with current knowledge of the importance of mitochondria in Alzheimer‘s disease (AD), a new possibility of mitochondrial bioenergy analysis in isolated platelets. A non-invasive procedure of mitochondrial respirometric analysis could be used as a diagnostic test for peripheral mitochondrial bioenergy that may indicate changes in brain mitochondrial function in AD patients. The new diagnostic method is suitable for monitoring therapy of AD patients. In AD, supportive therapy with vitamins and antioxidants is used, but there are no clear conclusions about their effect in slowing the progression of AD. In conclusion, the authors showed a prospective strategy for targeted therapy of AD, which includes gene therapy and mitochondrial transplantation.
