Congenital and transient non-infectious skin diseases in newborns

Skin is the largest organ that plays an important role in maintaining the homeostasis of the human body. Development of the fetal skin during the intrauterine period can be affected by various factors, such as infections, drugs, genetic predisposition or trauma. This factors can cause the development of skin lesion. Early and correct recognition and assessment the severity of these lesions is important in order to avoid excessive diagnostic and possibly therapeutic burden on the newborn. In this article, the authors provide an overview of the most common non-infectious skin diseases in the newborn period, focusing on the clinical features, differential diagnosis and treatment.
