Hyperoeosinophilia in children: causes and diagnostic algorithm
Eosinophils are differentiated granulocytes involved in a wide range of mechanisms of innate immunity, tissue repair, and pathogenes of various diseases. Eosinophilia is defined as increase in absolute eosinophil count in peripheral blood to more than 0,5 x 109/l. Hypereosinophilia is persistent moderate to severe eosinophilia, or marked tissue eosinophilia. Both conditions are relatively common laboratory finding in pediatric population and in up to one third of cases the underlying cause remains unrecognised. The proposed diagnostic algorithm takes into account identification of most common potential causes of persistent eosinophilia and associated organ involvement.
