Current risk of scabies in children
Introduction: scabies occurs worldwide more often in children than in adults. It can cause health and psychosocial problems. Occurrence is cyclical. In recent years, there have been reports of an increasing incidence of scabies in neighboring countries and in our dermatovenerology clinics. Material and methods: We analyzed the number of examinations, the number of treated persons and the number of those hospitalized in the Children’s dermatovenerological clinic of LF UK and NÚDCH in Bratislava. We analyzed reports on the activities of dermatovenerological clinics of the Slovak Republic by regions also. The results: An increasing trend in the number of patients in the Bratislava and Trnava regions and a decrease in the other regions was found. The proportion of children and adults indicates a more frequent occurrence of scabies in children. The cyclic course of the occurrence of scabies and the increasing incidence of adults, point to the risk of an increase in patients with scabies. Conclusion: Accurate diagnosis, effective treatment and environmental measures are effective means of preventing the rising incidence of the disease.
