Acute Palliative Care

Acute Palliative Care (APC) focuses on the rapid identification and management of sudden or severe symptoms in patients with advanced illnesses. Chronic exposure to uncontrolled patient suffering - beyond the capacity of acute medicine to address - can lead to healthcare professionals experiencing compassion fatigue. The availability of palliative care in acute hospital settings creates a space for fostering a culture of empathy and compassion, which ultimately may reduce burnout among healthcare staff. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for hospital-based palliative care consultation should include: identification of patients requiring palliative care, a structured response from the palliative care team based on urgency, the necessity of a multidisciplinary intervention in complex cases, development of a care plan and monitoring of intervention outcomes, and ongoing education and training for healthcare personnel.
