CT guided „core-cut“ biopsy in routine clinical praxis – single center experience
Purpose: Computed tomography (CT) guided biopsy is now widely recognized as an effective and safe procedure in obtaininig adequate specimen for histology. The aim of the study was to evaluate our experience in CT guided percutaneous „core-cut“ biopsies performed in Interventional radiology unit of Department of Radiology in Faculty hospital Trnava. Materials and methods: This monocentric retrospective study evaluated patients who underwent percutaneous CT guided „core-cut“ biopsy from January 2018 to December 2019. Medical records of each patient were analysed using the hospital information system as well as software archiving system. During the analysis, tha data regarding biopsy organ/place, lesion size, complications rate and sample adequacy of biopsy were analysed. Results: During the study period, 257 patients underwent percutaneous „core-cut“ CT guided biopsy. Liver biopsy was performed in 47 (18,3%) patients, lung in 144 (56%), renal and suprarenal in 12 (4,7%), pankreas in 15 (5,8%), skeletal lesions in 15 (5,8%) patients, neck in 2 (0,7%), retroperitoneum and pelvis in 22 (8,6%) patients. 46 outpatients were excluded from the study, as receiving their histology results was not possible. In remaining 211 patients, the collected samples were evaluated by the pathologist as aproppriate for the determination of histological diagnosis in 177 (83,8%) patients. Severe complications defined according to CIRSE (Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe) standards occurred only in 11 cases (4,3%), all of them pneumothorax. Conclusion: Percutaneous „core-cut“ biopsy under CT guidance is the method with high sample adequacy and low severe complication rates. This method should be used in patients in routine clinical setting to confirm/exclude malignancy.
