Mammographic breast cancer screening: reduction of mortality by 30%
Breast cancer screening is a preventive measure designed for an early detection of breast carcinoma. It is implemented through screening mammography examination of healthy women aged 50 – 69 every two years (In the current Slovak legislation (1) is the recommended interval, 40 – 69 years, every 2 years). Its aim is early detection of cancer in non-invasive, respectively early invasive metastasis-free stage, which reduces mortality from breast cancer and allows more effective therapeutic approaches. In Slovakia, it is necessary for the purpose of introduction of screening for breast cancer to establish an organization under the supervision of which would be conducted a qualitative transformation of individual workstations to suit the requirements of a screening program, as well as the establishment of new screening mammography workstations.
