Comprehensive treatment of epithelial ovarian cancer
Epithelial ovarian cancer is the most common cause of death arising from a female pelvic malignancy and the sixth most frequent cancer in women. Approximately 25,000 new cases of epithelial ovarian cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year, which result in approximately 15,000 deaths. Recognized clinically relevant risk factors (eg, infertility) and protective factors (eg, oral contraceptive use) associated with the development of ovarian cancer support the widely hypothesized role of ovulation (repetitive process of DNA damage, inflammation, and repair of the surface epithelium) in the pathogenesis of the maIignancy (2)
