Surgical management of malignant melanoma

The surgical management of primary cutaneous malignant melanoma (MM) is the basis for diagnosis, stage determination and therapy. The main role of surgery is to obtain histologic confirmation of the diagnosis and a complete patological staging of the primary lesion and regional lymph basin. Surgical treatment is an important part of therapy of MM in all stages of the disease, and thus it can be subdivided into surgery of the primary lesion, locoregional lymph nodes, satellite/in-transit metastases and distant metastases.
