Aging biology – a brief overview of molecular and cellular mechanisms
Based on the current hypotheses of life longevity, aging is the progressive natural stochastic degradation of parts of organism, which is in part genetically regulated. Our current understanding of molecular and cellular aging processes is derived from model organisms and mutants. These approaches together with some interventions, such as caloric restrictions and treatment with metformin revealed subcellular potential targets that participate in a spectrum of biological programs. Here we briefly summarize some of these important molecular and cellular processes and possible interventions, which must be confirmed in clinical trials.
