CURRENT GLOBAL AND LOCAL KNOWLEDGE AND PROBLEMS OF EPIDEMIOLOGY OF MALIGNANT TUMORS

An estimated 23.000 new cases of cancer and 11.600 deaths from cancer occured in Slovakia in recent years. The trends of overall incidence and mortality in men are influenced mainly by high but in recent decade peaking incidence rates of lung cancer and rising incidence of colorectal, oropharyngeal and prostate cancer. In women the rising overall cancer incidence is caused by increasing frequency of breast and in lesser extent of colorectal and genital organs cancer. The overall mortality from cancer in women remained stabilized during recent three decades. when the numbers of new cases for people of each sex are combined colorectal cancer was seen to be the most common cancer actually. The trends of incidence and changes of postions of individual mainly major cancer sites follow more the structure and development of cancers in developed countries of western Europe and indicate the orientation of preventive measures and interventions.
