Pediatric epileptosurgery – special considerations and current trends
Possibilities of modern epilepsy surgery offer help to most patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. The new surgical techniques, extending arsenal of epilepsy surgery procedures and still increasing quality of presurgical evaluation enable successful surgical solution of more complicated patients, not only in adulthood, but also in childhood. There is a clear worldwide trend, not only in increase of resections in MRI-nonlesional and extratemporal patients, but also in proportional growth of epilepsy surgery approaches in childhood, including the youngest age bracket. The aim of epilepsy surgery in children is not merely seizure reduction, but also arrangement as most favourable psycho-motor development as possible. The key for this achievement is chiefly the right and well-timed selection of eligible candidates, where the timing is just crucial. The following text refers to specifics of pediatric epileptology, affecting the planning, management and ultimately outcome of pediatric epilepsy surgery.
