Recurrent tumor of follicular infundibulum with transformation into basal cell carcinoma
Tumor of the follicular infundibulum (FIT) is a very rare benign adnexal cutaneous tumor with follicular differentiation. Because of frequent association with another tumors and tumor-like lesions of the skin there are still controversial views about its true histogenetic origin. One theory even assumes that FIT could be a form of a basal cell carcinoma. The authors of the article present a case report of woman suffering from a solitary skin lesion on the right thumb growing for many years, that was unsuccessfuly treated with repeated cryotherapy. Because of continual growth progression this lesion was surgically removed and a diagnosis of FIT was confirmed by histological examination. A tumor recurred 3.5 years after primary resection. Microscopical examination of reexcised sample showed FIT with focal features of malignant transformation into basal cell carcinoma. This case report indicates a probable histogenetic relationship between some adnexal tumors with follicular differentiation and cutaneous basal cell carcinoma, whose origin and pathogenesis have not been clearly elucidated to date.
