Cutaneous manifestations of Lyme disease – recommended diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
Lyme disease is a complex tick-borne zoonosis that poses an escalating public health threat in several parts of the world, despite sophisticated healthcare infrastructure and decades of effort to address the problem. In the centre of this multidisciplinary issue are the causative spirochetal pathogens belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. The review describes ethiopathogenesis, diagnosis and therapy of this disease. In describing the clinical manifestations, are covered all three stages thereof, with an emphasis on skin manifestations including Erythema migrans, Acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans, and Borrelia lymphocytoma. Antibiotic treatment of Lyme disease is described in details, as well as new approaches to the diagnosis and therapy of the disease.
