European guidelines for the treatment of atopic dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, inflammatory, pruritic disease affecting especially the pediatric population. The incidence of the disease is currently on the rise in European countries, ranging from 10 to 20% in children and 2 to 8% in adults. In 2012, european recommendations for the treatment of atopic dermatitis were developed by consensus. These recommendations were revised in 2018 and published in the JEADV (Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology). The European recommendations are written in two parts. The first part focuses on AD management from the patient‘s point of view, allergen avoidance strategy and dietary measures, basic treatment with regard to the selection of a suitable emollient, procedures for daily personal hygiene, antipruritic treatment, local anti-inflammatory treatment and phototherapy. The second part of the recommendations deals with targeted antimicrobial treatment, systemic therapy of severe forms of AD, allergen-specific immunotherapy, complementary treatment methods and, last but not least, important psychosomatic counseling and education of the patient and parents.
