Differential diagnosis of keratoacanthoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin in bioptical practice
Keratoacanthoma is a relatively frequent squamoproliferative skin lesion, which represents quite interesting nosological entity. Clinically, it is mostly characterised by sudden onset and rapid growth, usually followed by spontaneous regression. Histomorphologically, it shares similar features with conventional squamous cell carcinoma and still it is not completely obvious, whether it is a separate pathological unit or rather a variant of well diferentiated cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. From the bioptical point of view it is important, a distinction of keratoacanthoma from squamous cell carcinoma on the basis of usual histomorphology may be very difficult or even impossible. Submitted article is focused on description of the basic differential-diagnostic criteria of these two skin lesions.
Keywords: keratoacanthoma, squamous cell carcinoma.
