Bleeding in cardiac surgery and management of postoperative bleeding

In cardiac surgery, bleeding is the second most frequent postoperative complication, especially after using of the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Clinical manifestations of bleeding occur about in 20% patients and 5-7% of these patients have severe bleeding. The causes are multifactorial and are associated with the use of the CPB. Postoperative bleeding, surgical re-exploration and multiple blood transfusions are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The management of the postoperative bleeding starts in the pre-operative period, continues during the perioperative period with emphasis on the management of postoperative bleeding.
