Uroinfection in terms of bacterial infection

In the past few decades, worldwide prevalence of antimicrobial resistance is increasing at a rapid pace. This is to the extent that development of new antimicrobial drugs is falling short of demand to effectively treat this resistance. Mechanisms behind antimicrobial resistance involve changes to microbial outer membrane, drug efflux pump abnormalities, beta lactamase production, the creation of biofilms around cell bodies and the like. Incidence of resistance was found to be more in elderly population, male sex and inpatient population. This article describes the current state of resistant microbes associated with urinary tract infections and countermeasures for antimicrobial resistance, including new antimicrobials.
