Thyroid diseases in general practices

Diseases of thyroid gland have relative high incidence in common population. Occurence is more often in women. It is important, that also general practitioners are informed about major causes, diagnostic possibilities and therapy. Thyrotoxicosis is in younger patients bring about Graves-Basedow disease, in older population due toxic adenoma or multinodular goiter. Reason of hypothyroidism is more often chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. Role of general practitioner is to identify signs of thyroid gland disturbances in time and send patient to endocrinologist.
