Reflex syncope – the most common cause of the transient loss of consciousness

Reflex syncope is the most common type of the transient loss of consciousness. Its cause is brain hypoperfusion caused by reflex-induced hypotension. These mainly include vasovagal, carotid and situational syncope. Targeted anamnesis, in some cases a head-up tilt test and the implantation of a loop recorder are of fundamental importance in diagnosis. The prognosis of reflex syncope is good. The therapy of reflex syncope consists of increased fluid and salt intake, isometric counter-maneuvers, using midodrine or fludrocortisone, and in selected cases also cardiac pacing.
