Probiotics in gerontology

Microbiom in human body under physiological conditions represents a key factor to normal function of gastrointestinal system, immunity and prevention of various diseases. These diseases (e.g. diarrhea, impaired immunity, reduced intake of nutrients and vitamins) are observed in situations when normal physiological microbial flora has been impaired due to various reasons, either acutely (e.g. antibiotic uses) or progressively (e.g. due to malnutrition or ageing). This situation could be critical and lead to serious consequences in elderly patients, as they are more susceptible to more serious complications associated with disbalance in bacterial strains present in colon. The use of probiotics, i.e. living microbial flora, represents an important part of the current therapy. This article summarizes the most important data on importance and benefits of probiotics in elderly patients.
