Preoperative preparation of patients undergoing cardiac surgery – how may the practioners help? Part I: Optimization of nutrition, blood glucose. Compensation of respiratory, renal and coagulation parameters.

The aim of preoperative preparation of the patient before cardiosurgery is to optimally correct the modifiable risk factors – status of the nutrition, glycemia, respiratory and cardiac compensation, renal functions and coagulation parameters. This is all in an effort to eliminate, respectively mitigate the risk of postoperative complications, which significantly prolong the length of hospitalization and deplete the reserves of the patient recovering from major surgery.
