The need of panoramic x-ray examination in the differential diagnosis of stomatodynias
Patients often seek ambulances of physicians of first contact with uncertain clinical sings, such as itchiness of skin and mucouses of the lip and mouth, tongue burning, migrating pain, feeling of presence of a purulent process, or a feeling of pressure or aftertaste. We generally define these sensations in the oral cavity with the term “dynia”. Typically with these diagnoses, after a careful examination in the oral cavity, no pathological changes are found. An x-ray examination is often necessary to differentiate the diagnosis and to exclude local causes of stomatodynia and glossodynia. Over the last two years, we have conducted an analysis of 14 patients with stomatodynia. The occurrence of symptoms was as follows: the presence of tingling, itching, numbness and mild pain with aftertaste. Difficulties subsided two months after the professional dental care and specific treatment.
