Venereal diseases in Slovakia

Venerological diseases are considered to be sexually transmitted infections (STI), that weighty influence public health. In Slovakia, syphilis, gonorrhea, lymphogranuloma venereum and ulcus molle are noticed obligatory from the law. HIV/AIDS infection composes a segregate unit. Incidence of syphilis and gonorrhea weighty increased in the last two decades. However, there were also noticed some cases of mother-to child transmitted syphilis. Lymphogranuloma venereum and ulcus molle were noticed only sporadically, always as infections imported from endemic regions of the world. Incidence of HIV/AIDS is slowly increasing in Slovakia. It is transmitted mostly among men having sex with men (MSM). Syphilis and gonorrhea are mostly transmitted heterosexually; however, occurrence among men is higher. In Slovakia, the mode of sexual contact is not noticed. Therefore, the part of MSM in STI sharing cannot be evaluated. In West Europe, the part of MSM is very high and weighty influence spreading of STI. Trend of STI in European countries is discussed and compared with trend in Slovakia.
