New possibilities in the pharmacotherapy of primary hypertension

To manage the issue of hypertension requires besides the all-society measures, further education, lifestyle changes also the development of new effective and safe antihypertensive drugs. Besides the new members of the basic classes of antihypertensive drugs (new angiotensin receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers) the focus is put more on the new fixed dose (single pill) combinations of two or even three antihypertensive drugs and there are attempts to develop innovative mode of action antihypertensive drugs (endothelin system modulating agents, neutral endopeptidase inhibitors, vaccine against the angiotensin II) and to broaden the class of direct renin inhibitors by additional molecules.
