New trends in the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal and postoperative pain

Pain is always a displeasing impulse, that limitates and restricts our every day life. The pain originates from activation of inflammatory cells of organism on a kind of bothersome impetus with intensity exceeding the pain treshold. It is detected by nociceptors and is transmitted by nerve afferent pathways into central nervous system for further processing. We can block the transmission af algesic stimulus anywhere on the the signal pathway utilizing pharmacologically active agents. The author presents current overview on optimal use of opioid and nonopioid analgetic drugs for pain relief, the use of local anesthetic agents, and the use of epidural analgesia in pain treatment in patients undergoing reconstructive surgical procedures in orthopaedics.
