NON-PHARMACOLOGICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL POSSIBILITIES IN THERAPY OF OBESE PATIENTS WITH METABOLIC SYNDROME

Intraabdominal obesity is basal feature of metabolic syndrome and therefore also its basic diagnostic criterion. This condition is significantly associated with traditional risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Therapy of metabolic syndrome must be based on weight loss strategies. Therapy of obesity needs complex and multidisciplinary approach. Therapeutic goals must be individual and realistic. Lifestyle modification is the cornerstone of the treatment of obese patients. Initial recommendations to any obese diabetic patient should include optimisation of the meal plan and enhancement of physical activity. Psychological approach may be helpful with cognitive-behavioral therapy. If we are unsuccessful, pharmacology therapy may be considered (rimonabant, sibutramin, orlistat). If extreme (morbid) obesity is present, there is possible role of bariatric surgery.
