MANAGING DYSLIPIDAEMIA IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

Patients with chronic kidney disease are at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease and they have a higher prevalence of dyslipidaemias compared to general population. Dyslipidaemia is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis not only in the first stages of chronic renal disease but also in end-stages of renal disease. It is important to identify these patients early and treat their dyslipidaemias intensively before they develop end-stage renal disease. Most patients will require not only lifestyle modification but also lipid-lowering therapy. Patients with chronic kidney disease should be considered as patients at very high risk for cardiovascular disease and treated accordingly.
