Macrolides for the treatment of respiratory infection

Macrolide antibiotics are among the frequently used drugs in the outpatient group practice. Macrolides second generation semi-derivatives of erythromycin, azithromycin and clarithromycin have better pharmacological properties. In the treatment of community acquired respiratory infections we use them as second choice, when can not be used betalactams. In acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease we use macrolides to treat patients with light exacerbation without associated diseases and with small numbers of exacerbations yearly. As a first choice given the macrolides in respiratory infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract caused by Mycoplasma pneumonia, Chlamydia pneumonia and Legionella pneumophila.
