Diagnosis and management of neurogenic dysfunctions of the lower urinary tract in adult patients
Neuro-urological symptoms can be caused by various diseases and events affecting the nervous system controlling the lower urinary tract. The resulting clinical picture depends primarily on the location and extent of the neurological lesion. Neurogenic dysfunction of the lower urinary tract is often associated with a number of life-threatening complications, significantly worsens the quality of life of patients, and represents a significant economic burden for every healthcare system. Diagnosis is based on anamnesis, physical examination, imaging procedures and urodynamic examination. The goals of medical management include: preserving upper urinary tract function, improving quality of life, controlling urinary tract infection, and maintaining a low-pressure bladder that is continent and able to empty completely. The article provides an overview of current therapy options for patients with neurogenic dysfunction of the lower urinary tract.
