Osteoporosis in diabetes mellitus patients

Diabetes mellitus is a serious problem for an increasing number of patients. One in 11 people worldwide suffers from some form of diabetes mellitus. As part of the complex management of diabetics, on the one hand, early and intensive glycemic control is indicated to separate the development of microvascular and macrovascular diabetic complications. On the other hand, the comprehensive management of all comorbidities that patients with diabetes mellitus suffer from is currently being discussed. One of them is osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures. Fractures occur 2 to 6 times more often in diabetics. As part of the management of a diabetic, it is necessary to look for the risk of osteoporosis and fractures in a targeted manner, as well as to take adequate preventive and therapeutic measures. From a diabetological point of view, it is necessary to achieve optimal glycemic compensation, but taking into account the effect of antidiabetic drugs on bone. In the review, data on the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in patients with DM, as well as the effect of antidiabetic drugs on bone, are presented.
