Chondroitin sulfate – physiological role in cartilage and therapeutic potential

Chondroitin sulfate is glycosaminoglycan composed of a chain of alternating monosaccharides N-acetylgalactosamine and glucuronic acid. It is a part of a number of proteoglycans (versican, neurocan, decorin, biglycan, perlecan), which play different structural and regulatory roles in the body. Proteoglycan aggrecan is crucial for the ability of cartilage to withstand the pressure exerted at the joints. Use of chondroitin sulfate can improve function and relieve stiffness in arthritic joints and acting analgesic. It is available in the form of the drug and large amounts of dietary supplements. Therapeutic potential of chondroitin sulfate is also used in ophthalmology, urology and oncology.
