ANTIMICROBIAL TREATMENT OF LOWER URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS

Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI) is a common problem in ambulatory clinical practice. It is usually present as a bacterial cystitis or acute urethral syndrome. Recommended antibiotics for the treatment of lower UTI are those which achieve high and prolonged urine concentrations and have minimal side-effects; mainly oral fluoroquinolones, cotrimoxazole, betalactams, nitrofurantoin and fosfomycine – trometamol. In women with frequent recurrent episodes of cystitis, long – term chemoprophylaxis and immunotherapy may be warranted.
