Allergic rhinitis and its treatment

Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory condition in which nasal mucosa becomes inflamed. The most common symptoms include: sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose and postnasal drip. Untreated rhinitis is an independent risk factor for bronchial asthma. Treatment of allergic rhinitis can be divided into 3 categories: allergen avoidance, pharmacotherapy, and allergen-specific immunotherapy. Current treatment guidelines (ARIA) suggest more intensive treatment and intranasal corticosteroids are the most effective drugs. Cooperation between allergist-immunologist, pneumologist and ENT specialist is advised.
