Advantages of eversion carotid endarterectomy

Carotid surgery plays a very important role within the scope of vascular surgery. Its dominant aim is to prevent ischaemic brain events in the group of patients threatened due to severe atheromatous laesions localized in the carotid bifurcation. Carotid endarterectomy has been realized since the year 1954 that means its history is older than 60 years. There for it has overcome a long and complicated evolution that verified its well founded place in the management of carotid occlusive disease. It also gradually modified our view of surgical indications in several stages of the disease. The technique of surgery has changed considerably. These changes markedly improved chances of patients in danger of ischaemic events. Carotid endarterectomy has been still considered as the gold standard of treatment in spite of the enormous boom of endovascular treatment. Our paper is focused on the newer technique of carotid endarterectomy – eversion type described 57 years ago. Nowadays the eversion carotid endarterectomy is considered to be a recognized alternative to conventional endarterectomy. There are even some advantages of this procedure: lower morbidity and mortality, recurrent stenosis incidence and shorter hospitalization period and stay in the ICU.
