Venous thromboembolism in clinical practice

Venous thromboembolism is a major public–health problem. It belongs to the most frequent non-diagnosed acute diseases in medical practice. In the observed period from 1983 to 2005 out of 1375 deceased patients on 2nd Internal Clinic in Bratislava, 963 (70 %) underwent autopsy. Fatal pulmonary embolisation was detected in 118 cases (12 %). The most frequent autopsy finding of pulmonary embolism source was the thrombosis of femoralis vein in 52 cases (44,1 %). In 40 cases (33,9 %) despite autopsy the source of pulmonary embolism remained unknown.
